All people spend New Year’s Eve in different ways. Someone with friends goes to the sauna, someone makes salads. But my husband and I cleaned the chimney.
In fact, we try to do everything in advance. Therefore, chimney sweeps came to us in the summer. Apparently, they didn’t do their job very well. In autumn my husband and I noticed the frequent smell of smoke while using the fireplace. Then it became worse. Smoke detector began to turn on regularly and loudly. Imagine the situation: my husband drowns the fireplace, and suddenly-a loud smoke detector signal, the dog howls (he does not like sharp sounds), I wave the towel, trying to ward off the smoke from the sensor….really a madhouse. A couple of times, we even opened the window.
In the end, we called the chimney sweeps again, and in the meantime Dan decided to clean the pipe. And it fell on December 31. As the Russians like to say: “the boy said, the boy did”, the chimney was cleared. Dan got another skill on the list of things he already can do.
And I remembered of the European custom to RUB the button of a chimney sweep for luck. Buttons on the chimney sweep jacket have the ability to fulfill desires. But…the chimney sweep surely has to be with the blackened face – it symbolizes its connection with fire, the fireplace. Сhimney sweep with a clean face doesn’t have magical value.))) I really wanted to make a wish, but Dan has no chimney sweep coat. And his face was not black, only the cap was a little dirty)))
