Recently I remembered a movie “Shirley Valentine”, yesterday I got the mood to watch it again.
Back then 21 years ago I did not see the beginning of the film, I didn’t even know its title. I was switching from the TV-channel to the videorecording, checking on my video tapes. At some point, the film captured all my attention, I just could not turn myself away.
В свои 15 – 17 лет я была очарована прибалтийским акцентом. А теперь с акцентом говорю я.
По большому счету ничего страшного в этом нет. Но почему, как только услышу “откуда ваш акцент?”, у меня вылетает “ I am sorry”. По какой-то непонятной мне причине я считаю, что говорить с акцентом неправильно, и что это может раздражать моих собеседников.
А может быть это раздражает не собеседников, а меня? А может быть и не акцент, а боязнь не оправдать чью-то надежду и не соответствовать чьим-то ожиданиям.
Частенько от русских знакомых могу услышать разочарование в голосе, когда признаюсь, что все еще говорю с акцентом.

I speak with an accent. Of course, I do. I am Russian and do not have linguistic education or specific talent. My husband tells me, “If you get rid of your accent you will loose your charm”.
I try hard to sound right but often get the questions as “What nationality are you? Or where are you originally from?”. It’s quite normal in my situation. Continue reading “Speaking with an accent”
